This item is a collection to India Political Despatch No. 37 of 28 February 1867, from the Secretary of State for India to the Government of India Foreign Department (the Political Despatch itself is not included in this item). The collection consists of papers forwarded with the Government of Bombay Political Despatch to the Secretary of State for India, No. 65 of 28 September 1866, received 17[?] October 1866, forwarding papers relating to: differences between the Muscat and Wahabee [Wahhābī] governments, including negotiations between the Resident in the Persian Gulf, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, and the Wahabee Envoy; and the Government of Bombay’s request for Pelly to provide the precise words in Arabic attributed by Pelly to Aboo Esau [Abū ‘Īsá, also spelled Aboo Eysa in this item), who conducted William Gifford Palgrave through Arabia, regarding Palgrave’s reported designs for revolutionising the political and religious conditions of the Wahabee State.
The enclosed papers mostly consist of correspondence (with enclosures), dated 17 December 1865-11 August 1866: between Pelly and the Secretary to the Government of Bombay; and between the Secretary to the Government of Bombay and the Secretary to the Government of India. The enclosures to this correspondence include: a list of the tribes in Muscat and Omman [Oman] acknowledging the authority of the Sultan of Muscat (ff 666-667); and a map showing the Muscat Sultanate and neighbouring territory (IOR/L/PS/6/547 PT 5, Coll 37/18, f 668).
