- Title:
- File 1552/1904 Pt 3 ‘Mohammerah: Kherkha River Irrigation Scheme’
- Scope & Content:
-
The part contains papers related to proposals for irrigation schemes. This includes a proposal that the Shaikh of Mohammerah [Shaikh Khaz‘al bin Jābir bin Mirdāw al-Ka‘bī] should be supported by the British Government in a bid to obtain a concession for an irrigation scheme on the Karun River Basin, in return for assurances that the Shaikh will rely on British expertise. It also contains papers related to a proposal, and preliminary surveys, for an irrigation scheme on the Kherkha [Karkheh] River; and the establishment of a dam at either the Kut Nahr Hashim or Sinn-ul-’Abbas cataracts [waterfalls].
The papers also discuss a proposal to retain a portion of the Ahwaz Oil Guard – previously funded by the D‘Arcy Oil Syndicate – to facilitate preliminary survey work on the Kherkha River by Arnold Talbot Wilson, British Consul at Mohammerah.
A photograph showing the mills at Shuster [Shustar] on the Gargar Canal can be found on folio 14.
The file includes five plans connected with the Khazzal Canal Project: see folios 275-279.
The main correspondents are as follows: HM Minister at Tehran, the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, officials of the Foreign Office, officials of the India Office, and representatives of the Foreign and Political Department of the Government of India. Technical input is provided through reports by Sir William Willcocks and Arnold Talbot Wilson.
