- Title:
- File 3654/1913 Pt 1 'Oil: Admiral Slade's Committee'
- Scope & Content:
- The first part of the volume (folios 202-336) contains correspondence relating to the appointment and visit of the Admiralty Oil Commission under the chairmanship of Admiral Sir Edmond J W Slade, to the Persian oil fields and then to the Oil Conference held at Delhi, to examine and discuss oil production, supply and storage in the East, in connection with the Navy’s oil fuel requirements up to 1918 and the proposed Admiralty contract with the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. This is followed by two reports. The first is the ‘Geological report on some of the oil localities of Persia and the Persian Gulf, visited with the Admiralty Oil Commission in November and December 1913’ by Mr Edwin Hall Pascoe, Assistant Superintendent, Geological Survey of India, published in 1914. The second is the Final Report of Admiral Slade’s Commission, together with a map of the areas visited by the Commission and a map of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company’s concessions. There are also several geological maps of areas of oil production and exploration in Persia and the Persian Gulf, including the maps of Bahrain made by the pioneering geologist Dr Henry Guy Ellcock Pilgrim, as published in the ‘Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India’ in 1908. There are also technical reports and Government of India correspondence relating to oil fuel trials on Indian Railways between 1913 and 1918, as an alternative to coal consumption, which was in short supply.
