Contains letters of application for the post of Secretary of the Literary Fund from John Van Horn (with printed affidavit), H W Dewhurst, Octavian Blewitt, G.H. Smith, Whittington Henry Landon (recommended by William Jerdan) and James Stennett (with recommendation letter from Wieles Leigh Cliffe). Landon was appointed, with £200 sureties provided by Anthony Todd Thomson and Charles John Bloxham. The file also contains letters from Landon to John Bowyer Nichols and letters between John Britton, Nichols and Thomas Crofton Croker regarding Landon’s unsatisfactory performance in the job, as well as Landon’s resignation letter and a further letter from Landon to Nichols dealing with unresolved accounting matters. Includes a handwritten contents list by Nigel Cross.
