Letter, dated 03 January 1874 outlining the guidance from Government on the armies of native states, including what principals they should adhere to and how their size should be determined, and requesting that Pelly use these guidelines to determine whether the recent applications for arms made by the Maharaja of Jodhpoor [Jodhpur] and the Nawab of Tonk are justified.
The verso of folio 162 contains a draft letter, written in pencil by Pelly, and dated 24 January 1874 in which he asks the correspondent to submit his application in conformity with the guidance as laid down in Aitchison's letter.
