- Albina Maria da Conceição, African (born in Luanda, Angola), single, 30 years old, “branded with a hot iron on the right breast, with the form of an I,” had been held as slave by a certain F. de Figueiredo, despite the fact that she had been freed as soon as she arrived from the Coast of Africa. This situation was brought to the attention of the Portuguese consul in Belém, Joaquim Baptista Moreira, by the school teacher José Maria de Sá Dias Lamego. Lamego presented a very interesting letter written in Albina’s name that contains a narrative of her enslavement in Angola, the middle passage, the ship capture, her arrival in Rio de Janeiro, her emancipation, travel to Pará, and life in Belém. The Portuguese consul wrote then a letter to the president of the Province of Pará, Francisco Maria Correa de Sá e Benevides, denouncing the case and asking for a solution.
