- Scope & Content:
- Lino Antonio, “crioulo”/Creole, widower, an ex-slave and a freedman since 1859, filed a complaint against his former master Antonio Rodrigues Chaves. According to Lino Antonio, despite the fact that he and his wife, Nataria Francisca (deceased), were both freed, Chaves had been trying to convince him to return to captivity because he wanted to sell not only him but also his children (Maria José, Raimunda, Raimundo, and Benedito). The children were living with Chaves in the city of Bragança since the death of their mother Nataria. During the proceedings, Chaves claimed that Lino Francisco and his daughters Maria and Raimunda were fugitives and were hiding in different parts of the province along with other slaves of his property (Marcellino, Domingos, Zeferina, Nataria, Quiteria). Antonio Francisco Pinheiro, Guilherme Amasonas de Sá and Raymundo Clementino de Castro Valente, solicitors. João Diogo Clemente Malcher, judge. João Luis Peleja, scrivener.
