Five papyrus fragments of varying size from a roll, extracted from mummy cartonnage; written on both sides. The front bears portions of three columns written along the fibres on the largest fragment, and portions of additional lines on the smallest fragments; on the back, there are columns of a Demotic and Greek texts running across the fibres. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

12. Papyrus 624

Title:
Loan of Wheat (P.Grenf. I 28, P.Lond. III 624 descr., TM 220)
Scope & Content:
Contract for the loan of some artabas of wheat, partly crossed out; the name of the lender is lost. Penalty apples if Phmois, the borrower, fails to repay the wheat back within the agreed time. At the end is the demotic receipt of payment. Date and summary are on the back.

Extent:

Papyrus sheet, broken off at the top and right, with damage along the horizontal folds. A thin strip of papyrus was glued diagonally onto the upper part of the front-side. Writing is along the fibres on the front and across them on the back. The back was rotated 180 degrees and bears the beginning of three lines in the right edge. On the front there are portions of 19 lines, the first being very mutilated; of the others, only the beginnings survive. Part of the text was crossed out. The last five lines are in demotic. Left and lower margins survive. A sheet-join running along the height of the sheet is visible in the left edge of the front. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Extent:

Two papyrus fragments forming an almost complete sheet, with a small portion lacking in the lower half. Writing runs along the fibres on the recto and across them on the verso, with the verso having a two-line docket. On the recto, the upper margin measures 25 mm, the left 5 mm, the right a maximum of 20 mm; the lower margin, originally of 30 mm, was then used for three Demotic lines. The papyrus was rolled horizontally from top to bottom. The damage is located along the horizontal folds. The surface is occasionally abraded. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Papyrus sheet, with light-coloured patches and dark spots at the top, complete but damaged by holes. Writing runs along the fibres on both sides, the back bearing one line with Greek and Demotic. On the front there is one column. All margins are extant, the right being minimal. A sheet-join runs along the height of the sheet at 105-110 mm from the left edge; a small strip of vertical fibres is visible in the lower half of the sheet. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Fragments from the left half of a papyrus sheet, broken off to the right; with insect holes and breaks along the horizontal folds. Writing runs along the fibres on the front and across them on the back. The back bears two lines, one in Demotic and one in Greek. On the front there is one column of 26 lines, which lack the right half, with the exception of line 24; the last line is indented and separated by paragraphus and some blank space. Extent:
Light-brown papyrus roll of fine quality, complete and well preserved. On the front, there are 3 columns; the first column has 8 lines written across the fibres, as the first sheet of the roll displays vertical fibres; the second column is wide and has 16 complete lines; the third column has 7 lines in Greek, followed by some blank space and 7 lines in Demotic. Margins are extant; sheet-joins are visible. On the back, there are dark spots and traces of ink. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Two papyrus fragments that do not belong together, housed in one glass case.

The upper fragment (A) is the top portion of a sheet, broken off at the bottom and written on both sides: the text on the recto is Greek and runs across the fibres, whereas the verso has a one-line docket in Demotic running along the fibres. On the verso, several fibres are missing.

The lower fragment (B) is the lower part of a sheet, written on one side along the fibres, the back being blank.
