Letter of the Bishop Sotas on a Donation (P.Oxy. XII 1492, TM 31748)
Scope & Content:
A letter from the bishop Sotas to a certain Demetrianus, addressed as ‘holy son’, containing pious thoughts and instructions on dividing a plot of land which Demetrianus may decide to donate to the church. The address is on the back.

Papyrus sheet, damaged at the top and sides. The upper margin measures 17 mm, the lower 3 mm, the left 25 mm and the right is minimal. Writing is on both sides along the fibres, the back having a one-line docket. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Of the first column, portions of eleven lines survive; of the second, only the beginnings of 9 lines remain. The text on the verso, written by a different hand, is complete. Papyrus fragment, with writing on both sides, along the fibres on the front and across them on the back. The front has the lower portion of a column, of which eight lines survive, the first two very fragmentary. All lines are broken to the right. On the back there is the beginning of a column, of which ten lines remain, the last three very mutilated. The beginnings of all lines are missing. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

First comes the side with the text written across the fibres, then the one with writing along the fibres. The side margins survive to 32 mm. 19 fragments of varying size from a papyrus roll, numbered 1-19 inside the frame; fragment 3 was never received by the British Museum and is lost. Fragments 1, 7 and 10 are darker by patches. Writing is on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. Each fragment contains portions of a column, with the exception of fragments 4 and 7, which preserve parts of two columns. Each column presumably had 30 lines and was 60 mm wide. The intercolumn, preserved by fragments 4 and 7, measures 15 mm. The lower margin survives to 35 mm, the upper to 10 mm. The fragments are mounted on cardboard in a glass case.
