Japanese watercolours, Chinese silk embroideries and Japanese textile appliques collected by Dr Engelbert Kaempfer during his sojourn in Japan (1690-92) whilst in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as medical officer.
The drawings and multi-media works pasted on paper were formerly all displayed in a single bound volume, whose old covers are stored separately at Add MS 5252/ old covers. Currently, the items are mounted individually and stored in boxes in groups of 8 to 10 items.
Items 71-99, a series of 18th century Chinese woodblock prints, were transferred to the Prints and Drawings Department of the British Museum on 24 November 1906 (British Museum SL. 5252).

The Sloane Manuscripts were held by the British Museum Department of Manuscripts until 1973 after which they were transferred to the British Library.

Part of this description has been transcribed from the handwritten Catalogue of Additional Manuscripts, vol. 21 (1832), located in the Manuscripts Reading Room, where the volume is described as: 'Fifty Drawings of Japanese Temples and other Buildings, executed in colours by native artists, and brought from thence by Dr. Engelbert Kampfer. (1-50) –Imitations of flowers in colored silks, from Japan. (51.52) Drawings of Japanese Figures in colours, by native artists (53-59.) Japanese Figures, worked in colored silks (60-67.) Other Figures in raised silk (68-70.) Paintings of Flowers, Birds and Fruits from China, by native artists (71-99.) Smaller imitations of Flowers inSilks, by an inferior artist. (100-115.) To all the above are added the names in Japanese or Chinese. Large folio.'
