- Title:
- Poplar Almshouses and Poplar Chapel
- Scope & Content:
- The East India Company purchased a house with three acres of ground at Poplar in 1627 as an almshouse for needy Company marine servants. Part of the land was later used to build a chapel and burial yard for the local inhabitants. Poplar Chapel was completed in 1654 and underwent major repairs and renovation in 1775 and 1803. The yard was enlarged in 1776 with land taken from a neighbouring field. The almshouses were rebuilt in 1802: those on the south side of Poplar Chapel accommodated petty officers, seamen, or their widows, while those on the north side were occupied by commanders, officers, or their widows. The northern group of houses was extended in 1808. In 1866 the almshouses were demolished and the land sold for £12,000 to the Poplar District Board, which used the site for public offices and a recreation ground. Poplar Chapel was transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1866 and became the church for the newly created parish of St Matthias.
