Chronicles and other historical material copied in the 13th to the 16th centuries, bound together in the early modern period from three formerly separate parts (see Tite: The Early Records (2003), p. 183).
ff. 1-3: Flyleaves with lists of contents in an early modern hand;
ff. 4-39: Ralph Niger, Chronicle to 1178 (1st quarter of the 13th century);
ff. 40-45: Annalistic chronicle, 1114–1158 (ff. 40r–44r); a note on Emperor Justinian (ff. 44v–45r); list of the kings of Wessex and England (f. 45v), (1st half of the 13th century-1st quarter of the 14th century);
ff. 46-131: Ralph of Coggeshall, Chronicon Anglicanum, 1066–1223 (1st quarter of the 13th century; ff. 129-131 added in the mid-16th century);
ff. 132-137: Cartulary of the Honour of Leicester (4th quarter of the 13th century);
ff. 138-143: Irish historical memoranda, including obits of the Butler family, AD 1285–1515 (f. 138v); Dublin Chronicle, AD 948–1165 (ff. 139r–140v); notes referring to Sligo (f. 142r) and to the de Lacy family (f. 143v), (15th -16th century);
ff. 144-145: Psalter leaves, (3rd quarter of the 14th century), now removed to form Royal MS 13 D I/1, ff. 3, 19.

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician; his name inscribed on f. 4r.
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
