Marginal Arabic numeration of chapters (ff. 14v-57) added later (18th century?).
Decoration:
Large or full-page drawings of medical procedures or physicians (ff. 7v-9v, 12v, 13r) in ink, mostly against backgrounds of coloured washes, some also with gold. Drawings of plants, scenes and animals throughout. Large initials (2-4 lines) in alternating blue and red, occasionally with penwork decoration in the same or contrasting colour. Titles and rubrics in red.
According to Collins (2000), the iconography of the plant illustrations descend from South Italian cycle such as found in Florence, Biblioteca Laurenziana, MS Plut. 73.41 and Harley MS 5294. Harley MS 1585 served as model to Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ashmole MS 1462, and Sloane MS 1975.

Origin:
Southern Netherlands (Meuse Valley).
Provenance:
Henry Worsley (b. 1675, d. 1741), scholar and manuscript collector, envoy at the Court of Portugal (1714-21) and governor of Barbados (1721-31), his manuscript no. 49; donated by him to Robert Harley together with other manuscripts from Worsley's collection (now Harley MSS 1586-1747, Harley MS 1811, and Harley MS 1812) before December 1712: a note in pencil (f. i recto) in the hand of Harley's librarian, Humfrey Wanley (1672-1726), reads 'Coll Worsley'.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta, née Cavendish Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library. Harley shelfmarks '91.A.1/1585' in dark brown ink and '2/III B' in pencil on f. i recto.
