Contains records from both pre- and post-formation of the Oral History Society, much relating to the Patrick Saul of the BIRS and its activities within oral history, especially the proposed establishment of a Central Oral History Unit there. Many records within the file (for example letters and funding applications) outline the aims of this central unit as they were first conceptualised.
Also includes:
- Correspondence (generated by Saul and others) and documents relating to the BIRS and the National Sound Archive (NSA)
- Correspondence from the Department for Education and Science, and the SSRC
- A photocopy of an article from Oral History (Vol. 6, 1978) regarding a future national sound archive
- A list of Oral History Committee members (Theo Barker, Brian Harrison, George Ewart Evans, Paul Thompson, Stewart Sanderson, Timothy Eckersley and John Saville)
- A memorandum on oral history interview techniques, with questionnaires
- A grant application made to the SSRC for help with funding to get the central unit up and running. Includes a draft budget and 5 year projection of costs.
- A copy of a conference paper on 'Oral History in Britain' by T C Barker (which includes background information about the OHS and the central unit).
