Private Letter of Sarmates (P.Oxy. X 1297, TM 33636)
Scope & Content:
A letter from Sarmates to his father Dioscorus concerning the dispatch of some goods such as oil for burning and eating and wine for a feast. Sarmates also asks the recipient to bring some milk-cakes if he comes there. With docket on the back.

Papyrus sheet, fully preserved, with writing on either side along the fibres. The back bears a two-line docket. On the front the upper margin measures approximately 10 mm, the lower 32 mm and the side margins are minimal. The papyrus is housed in a glass case.

Fragments of a papyrus sheet, containing portions of two columns written along the fibres. The sheet lacks most of its mid portion, and the gap, 60 mm high, affects 6 full lines of the first column and part of 6 lines of the second column. The lower margin measures 26 mm. Forty-eight numbered fragments and three further fragments named ‘New fr.’, ‘New fr. 1’ and ‘New fr. 2’ of varying size, all coming from a papyrus roll, darker in places, especially on the back. Writing is on one side along the fibres, the back being blank apart from modern numbering. Only fragments 1, 4 and 5 are of fair size: fragment 1 contains portions of 23 lines of a column and part of the upper margin, joining fragments 2, 3 and 22; fragment 4, which joins fragments 13, 24, 46 48, preserves parts of another column and of the upper and lower margins; fragment 5, which joins fragment 6 and a fragment named as 'new fragment’, has portions of two columns; of the first column, very few letters are preserved by fragment 29. The other fragments are of small size and come from different parts of columns. The surface is damaged by wormholes and abraded in places; occasionally, strips of fibres are missing. The fragments are housed in four glass cases named Papyrus 2443(1), Papyrus 2443(2), Papyrus 2443(3), and Papyrus 2443(4).

Papyrus fragment, broken off at the sides and damaged at the top and bottom. The papyrus has darker spots, and the surface is damaged and abraded throughout. Writing is on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. Portions of two columns are preserved, each of 35 lines; each line contained between 13 and 18 letters. The upper and lower margins survive to 60 mm and 72 mm respectively. The intercolumnar space measures 20-23 mm. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Fragments of varying size from a papyrus roll. They were originally 200, and more than three quarters of them have been identified: a few still remain unplaced.

Portions of 20 columns, not all of which are consecutive, are preserved; the columns were tall, ranging from 47 to 53 lines. The average width of the column is 60 mm; the intercolumn is 21 mm on average. The average number of letters per line is 19.

Writing is on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. Mounted on cardboard and housed in three glass cases named Papyrus 2445(1), 2445(2), and 2445(3); in Papyrus 2445(3) are housed the unplaced fragments.

Two papyrus fragments of different size, written on both sides, along the fibres on the recto and across them on the verso. The smaller fragment, which was joined to the larger one, was placed upside down.

The recto preserves the ends of twenty-one long lines forming a column, and the beginnings of a few lines of a second column, partly preserved by the smaller fragment. The intercolumn measures 2--30 mm and the lower margin 28 mm.

The verso was reused for another text, of which parts of 12 lines survive. The upper margin measures 30 mm.

The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.
