D’OYLY, Sir CHARLES, 7th Baronet (1781-1845), and others
---------------------
WD4043-4044; WD4117-4118
Four albums of drawings and other material including prints by and associated with D’Oyly and his circle in Calcutta and Patna 1818-32, together with drawings made by D’Oyly on leave at the Cape 1832-3. Included is material associated with the later owners, the Macnabb family. James Munro Macnabb (1790-1860) served in India from 1803 to1831. He was related to the D’Oylys through his marriage in 1820 to Jane Mary Campbell (1803-86), the second Lady D’Oyly’s cousin. Both ladies were also cousins to the Marchioness of Hastings, and the Macnabb wedding took place at Barrackpore House. Macnabb became a favourite of Lord Hastings, becoming in 1822 his Private Secretary. Practically his last official act before leaving India in 1823 was to appoint Macnabb Collector of Customs at Mirzapore. In 1828 he was transferred in the same capacity to Agra, and then to Benares, where he was promoted to Commissioner of Revenue and Circuit, his last post before leave in 1831 taken in Scotland, and then retirement. The Macnabbs and the D’Oylys remained in touch, and the childless Lady D’Oyly would seem to have left her cousin more Indian material after her death, as well as to her sister, Isabella Rose Gilbert. Some of the items in these albums must have been sent to Mrs. Macnabb in India and the rest acquired after Lady D’Oyly’s death.
Provenance: James Munro Macnab, and by descent. For the rest of the Macnabb Collection, see also Mss Eur F206, Add.Or.4205-38, P2481, P2483, Photo752, F866.
WD4043-44 purchased 1984; WD4117-4118 purchased 1985.
