A compendium of medical texts in Arabic and Persian
- Scope & Content:
-
Four texts in Arabic and one in Persian on medicine and pharmacology. Colophons to the first three texts in the volume bear dates between Ramaḍān and Dhū al-Ḥijjah 1099/July-October 1688.
- Contents:
- (1) ʽImād al-Dīn Shīrāzī (عماد الدين شيرازي), Risālah-i yanbūʿ (رساله ينبوع, ff. 2v-98r);
- (2) ʽImād al-Dīn Shīrāzī (عماد الدين شيرازي), al-Murakkabāt al-shāhīyah (المركبات الشاهية, ff. 98v-214v);
- (3) Jurjānī, (جرجاني), Khuffī-ʾi ʿAlāʾī (خفى علأى, ff. 218v-262v);
- (4) Yūsufī (يوسفي ), Intikhāb az kitāb Jāmiʿ al-favāʾid-i Yūsufī (انتخاب از كتاب جامع الفوائد يوسفي, ff. 262v-264r);
- (5) Mūjaz Kummī (موجز كمي, ff. 264v-311r).
The former owner of the volume, Colonel Robert Taylor, noted the contents in English on f. 1r and noted existing disruptions to the folio sequence (see ff. 161v-162r and 168v).
The phrase 'موافق سنه لوى ئيل ١٠٩٩' (mawāfiq sanah lū-[y]īl) is found in the legible colophons to the first, second, and third texts (also present in the fifth text although the colophon has been damaged). Meaning 'equivalent to the Year of the Dragon, 1099 [hijrī], this dating refers to the Chinese-Uighur duodecennial calendar, introduced to Persianate environments under the Ilkhanids and still in limited use into the twentieth century [see Melville, Charles, 'The Chinese-Uighur Animal Calendar in Persian Historiography of the Mongol Period'. Iran, 32 (1994), pp. 83-98].
