- Title:
- Northumberland Alley
- Scope & Content:
- In 1795 the East India Company purchased from Stephen Ludlow, William Sharp, John Hutchins and Jonathan Hutchins a piece of freehold ground on the north-east side of Northumberland Alley on which eleven old tenements stood. The price of £2,000 included payment for the unexpired term of a lease held by Thomas Hancock. The estate was acquired in order to alter the passage through Northumberland Alley into Crutched Friars, thus enabling the junction of the Company warehouses previously divided by the Alley. The East India Company also purchased estates in 1793 and 1798 on the west side of Northumberland Alley in order to make a communication between the newer part of the Fenchurch Street warehouse and the Jewry Street warehouse.
