Acknowledgment of Debt (P.Oxy. VI 914, TM 20378)
Scope & Content:
Aurelius Apphous, of Oxyrhynchus, acknowledges a debt of 2 solidi that he owes to Aurelius Serenus, on account of various dyes he bought from him. Apphous’s property has been mortgaged. With consular date at the beginning and docket on the back.

Papyrus sheet, broken off at the bottom and left (front) and with breaks along the folds and few holes. Writing runs along the fibres on both sides, the back having a one-line docket. The front bears 19 lines, all lacking the beginnings, with a loss of 3-6 letters, with the exception of line 2, which is complete and indented. Of line 19 only the top of few letters remain. The number in red on the back refers to the publication in P.Oxy. VI. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Fragments of varying size from a papyrus roll, housed in three glass frames named Papyrus 2048(1), Papyrus 2048(2), and Papyrus 2048(3). The fragments housed in the second and third frames are mounted on cardboard, their back side being blank. The back of Papyrus 2048(1) bears few traces of ink. Each sheet forming the roll was between 170 and at least 215 mm wide.

The fragments bear portions of 18 columns written parallel to the fibres on the front, with a gap of 11 columns after column 7; each column measures 245 x 65, and has an average of 33-35 lines; each line contains approximately 18 letters; the intercolumn measures c. 20 mm. The entire roll would have had 133/134 columns.

Unplaced fragments, labelled as a-z, are housed in Papyus 2048(3).

Portion of a papyrus roll, medium-brown, with detached scraps; fair condition, with minor surface damage in places; written on both sides. The text on the front runs along the fibres and is broken off on the sides; portions of three columns survive, with 40 lines to the column; the second column is complete and measures 155 x 205 mm; margins are very narrow. A sheet-join is visible left of centre. On the back, there are three columns, overall well preserved and almost complete, running across the fibres and written the other way up in relation to the text on the front; traces of a fourth column are visible. The first column is preceded by ample blank space; intercolumn and part of the upper and lower margins survive. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.
