Scope & Content:

Collection of alchemical texts by the Seljuq chancellor (صاحب ديوان الإنشاء) and vizier, poet and alchemist Muʼayyad al-Dīn Abū Ismāʻīl al-Ḥusayn ibn ʻAlī al-Ṭughrāʼī (مؤيد الدين أبو إسماعيل الحسين بن علي الطغرائي, d. 1121).

The copy was produced by Darwīsh ʻAlī ibn Shams al-Dīn al-Kāẓimī (درويش علي بن شمس الدين الكاظمي) between 10 Ṣafar and 9 Rabīʻ I 1091/1 March and 30 March 1680 (see colophons on ff. 101r, 160r, 182r and 196v).

(3) al-Ṭughrāʼī (الطغرائي), al-Juzʼ al-thānī wa-huwa Maṣābīḥ al-raḥmah (الجزء الثاني وهو مصابيح الرحمة, ff. 101v-160r);
(4) al-Ṭughrāʼī (الطغرائي), [Alchemical dream vision], (ff. 160v-161r);
(5) al-Ṭughrāʼī (الطغرائي), Kitāb tarākīb al-anwār (كتاب تراكيب الأنوار, ff. 161v-182r);
(6) al-Ṭughrāʼī (الطغرائي), al-Juzʼ al-awwal min Kitāb jāmiʻ al-asrār (الجزء الأول من كتاب جامع الأسرار, ff. 182v-196v).

At the beginning of the volume, four loose sheets have been bound in on guards:

(1) Brief note giving an alchemical recipe, written in a calligraphic hand on western laid paper; the note must be taken from a larger work since it mentions material discussed in 'chapter 4' (الباب الرابع, f. 1av [upper]);
(2) Some verses from a poem on love, written on lined, western wove paper (f. 1av [lower]);
(3) Folio from an alchemical manuscript on eastern laid paper (dimensions: 178 x 124 mm leaf, 135 x 80 written; ruling: misṭarah; 18 lines per page; vertical spacing 13 lines per 10 cm; naskh; Black ink, with rubrications and overlinings in red; double text frame in red ink); contains the following short chapters (أبواب): Chapter of making a gem (باب اتخاذ جوهرة, f. 1br), Chapter on hair (باب في الشعر, f. 1br), Chapter on ferments (باب في الخمائر, f. 1bv) discussing three compounds each called a bāb, the first two of which are dsicussed on this folio;
(4) Alchemical notes taken from al-Ṭughrāʼī's Book of the Compendium of Secrets (كتاب جامع الأسرار, items 1 and 6 in the present volume, ff. 1v and 5r-12v, and 182v-196v) written on western laid paper that has been folded into a bifolium and bound into the volume with its text parallel with the spine (ff. 1cv-1dr).

Folio 1r contains some verses from the alchemical poem Splinters of Gold (شذور الذهب) by Burhān al-Dīn ʻAlī al-Andalusī (برهان الدين علي الأندلسي, d. 1197), known as Ibn Arfaʻ Raʼs (ابن أرفع الرأس).

There is a loose alchemical note inserted between ff. 134 and 135. A sheet of alchemical notes, including a table and a diagram, has been bound into the volume as f. 72a.
