Royal Literary Fund - Annual Reports

Scope & Content:

The Annual Reports contain information regarding the Literary Fund's finances, subscribers and officers. They also contain varying additional documentation, including descriptions of the Fund's work, copies of its charter and statistical tables. Also present are materials relating to the Fund's Anniversary Dinners, including poems in the earlier volumes (present irregularly up until 1839) and full transcriptions of all the speeches given in the reports between 1842 and 1914 and from 1920-1939. As the contents of the reports vary quite significantly, full details are presented at file level.

The reports form one continuing chronological series, with one exceptional volume (Loan 96 RLF 3/9a), which contains copies of pamphlets exchanged between 'the Reformers of the Literary Fund' (Charles Wentworth Dilke, Charles Dickens and John Forster) and the defenders of the status quo within the Fund. The years covered by the bound volumes of reports are given in the following list. There are a few years in the sequence in which no annual report was produced, most notably during the 1790s and the 1940s; these absences are noted in the file-level records.
